This imposing fortress was built in 1557 on the orders of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, to protect Villefranche and its bay, which occupied a highly strategic position along the Mediterranean coast. Designed according to the new military techniques of the Renaissance, the citadel features remarkable bastioned architecture, with massive ramparts, powerful bastions, defensive ditches and former casemates.
Decommissioned as a military site in 1967 and listed as a Historic Monument in 1968, the Citadel has since taken on an entirely new role. The former fortress has become an important administrative, artistic and cultural centre and is now home to Villefranche-sur-Mer Town Hall.
But another highlight of the visit is simply wandering through the Citadel’s courtyards, ramparts and gardens overlooking the Mediterranean. From several viewpoints, you can enjoy beautiful views over the old town, the harbour and, above all, the spectacular Bay of Villefranche.
The Citadel is also home to three museums and collections: the Volti Museum Foundation, dedicated to the sculptor Antoniucci Volti; the Boumeester-Goetz Collection, devoted to the works of Christine Boumeester and Henri Goetz; and the Museum of the History and Collections of the Town.
The Citadel also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, performances and cultural events.
