The Village of Sainte-Agnès
A Belvedere Over the Mediterranean...
Sainte-Agnès is a charming hilltop village located above Menton. Known as one of the highest fortified villages in Europe, it sits at around 800 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views over the Mediterranean Sea, the French Riviera, and the town of Menton.
This medieval village is a true gem for lovers of history and nature.
As you stroll through the village’s cobbled streets, you’ll admire the typical architecture with its stone houses, shaded little squares, and ancient fountains. Sainte-Agnès is the perfect place for a peaceful wander and to soak in the tranquil atmosphere of the South of France.
Sainte-Agnès Castel
The village of Sainte-Agnès is famous for its fortress, built in the 16th century to protect the region from invasions. A visit to the fortress is a must: you can explore its ramparts and watchtowers, as well as exhibitions devoted to the local history.
From the heights of the fortress, the breathtaking 360° panoramic view stretches across Menton, Monaco and, on a clear day, even as far as Italy.
Access and the Climb
Starting point: The walk begins at the car park next to the Maginot Line fort.
The path: Follow the paved pedestrian path leading uphill from the car park.
The climb: The ascent is fairly steep and includes numerous stone steps.
The reward: Perched on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of around 800 metres, the site offers a spectacular 360° panoramic view over the Bay of Menton, the surrounding mountains and, of course, the rooftops of the village below.
The Maginot Line Fort of Sainte-Agnès
Located at the foot of the fortress, it is also known as Ouvrage Sainte-Agnès. It is a military fortification built in the 1930s as part of the Maginot Line, the vast French defensive system designed to protect the country’s borders before World War II.
The fort consists of several combat blocks connected by a deep and secure network of underground tunnels. These galleries once housed soldiers, ammunition, equipment, and communications systems.
The fort was equipped with cannons, machine guns, and observation posts intended to repel any attack.
Today, the Sainte-Agnès fort is a historical site open to visitors. Guided tours allow you to discover the military installations, underground galleries, observation posts, and original wartime equipment.

Sainte-Agnès also hosts regular cultural events and artisan markets, especially during the summer, which attract both locals and tourists. These festive occasions are perfect opportunities to enjoy traditional music, Provençal dances, and regional culinary specialties.
For dining, the village offers several restaurants and cafés, many of which highlight Provençal and Niçoise cuisine. Some venues boast terraces with panoramic views, ideal for a relaxing, sunlit meal.
Perched at the top of the village of Sainte-Agnès, this restaurant offers a breathtaking view of the Bay of Menton.
From the moment you arrive, you're welcomed with a warm smile and a family-style atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home.

Often described as an eagle’s nest, suspended between sky and sea, the restaurant provides a truly timeless escape.
It’s the perfect spot for a gourmet lunch, a coffee with a view, or a romantic dinner at sunset.
At Le Righi, people come as much for the quality of the food as for the magic of the setting.

Hiking enthusiasts will also find their bliss here: numerous trails lead from the village to surrounding ridges, valleys, and neighboring hamlets. The GR52, a renowned long-distance hiking trail crossing the Mercantour National Park, passes nearby. The surrounding landscape—olive groves, pine forests, and limestone cliffs—is typical of the Mediterranean mountain vegetation.
