The Village of

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

Nestled between Menton and Monaco...

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is a gem of the French Riviera, set between the sea and the mountains.

This hilltop village overlooks the Mediterranean and offers breathtaking panoramic views.

Its medieval heart, still perfectly preserved, is a maze of cobbled alleyways and stone arches.

Founded in the 10th century under the name Roccabruna, the village originally served as a defensive stronghold.

Its most iconic monument is the Castle of Roquebrune, one of the oldest feudal castles in France.

Built by the Counts of Ventimiglia, the castle has stood the test of time, preserving its austere character.

Its square tower, which visitors can climb, offers breathtaking views over the sea, the hills, and all the way to Monaco.

At its feet, the ochre-colored houses of the village seem frozen in time.

The silence is striking, broken only by the song of cicadas or the chime of the Sainte-Marguerite Church bell.

This 13th-century church houses a faithful reproduction of Michelangelo’s Last Judgment.

Just below the village lies a natural treasure: the millennia-old olive tree.

Over 2,000 years old, still productive, it boasts a circumference of more than 20 meters.

Classified as a “Remarkable Tree of France,” it symbolizes longevity and peace.

From this spot, a path leads down to the sea, winding through terraced gardens and ancient stone walls.

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin has long inspired artists and notable figures.

Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, Jacques Brel, and even Picasso stayed here.

Its unique atmosphere—blending culture, nature, and architecture—has always captivated visitors.

The village lives by the rhythm of the seasons, far from the hustle and bustle of the coast.

Cultural events are held throughout the year, including concerts and exhibitions.

The local market offers typical Provençal products: olive oil, herbs, soaps, and honey.

Upon reaching the coastline, you’ll discover the Le Corbusier Promenade, an exceptional coastal trail.

Stretching 8.4 km round trip, it connects the Roquebrune-Cap-Martin train station to the Promenade du Cap-Martin, following cliffs and secluded coves.

The path is named after the famed architect Le Corbusier, who spent every summer here.

He built a tiny wooden cabin, minimalist yet cleverly designed, where he vacationed each year.

This 15 m² cabin, made of brown pine boards and nestled under a carob tree, is accessible via a small staircase open to the public (guided tours available upon request at the Cap Martin Tourist Office).

Nearby is the Villa E-1027, designed by the pioneering designer Eileen Gray—a true masterpiece of modernist architecture.

Today, both the cabin and the villa are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Roquebrune’s seafront also features charming, discreet beaches.

La Plage de la Buse, with its crystal-clear water, is popular for its tranquility and natural beauty.

It is surrounded by steep cliffs, perfect for hiking or paragliding.

Cap Martin, covered in pine and olive trees, is a favorite walking spot among locals.

Here you’ll find sumptuous villas, remnants of the Belle Époque (the beautiful period - end of the 19th century to the beginning of the First World War).

Among them is the Villa Cyrnos, built for Empress Eugénie, widow of Napoleon III.

Other architectural gems such as Villa l’Éclaircie, Villa Cynthia, and more evoke the grandeur of a bygone era.

Together with Cap d’Antibes and Cap Ferrat, Cap Martin forms part of the iconic trio of natural landmarks on the Côte d’Azur.

It is home to some of the most beautiful villas on the Mediterranean coast—dating from the late 19th century and the Belle Époque, nestled in tall pine groves, their white facades facing the bay of Roquebrune.

Roquebrune is also a hiker’s paradise.

Marked trails lead up into the hills, offering breathtaking views over the bay of Roquebrune.

The "Sentier des Douaniers", also known as the Coastal Path or "Promenade Le Corbusier", runs along the shoreline for about 4.2 kilometers, passing by secluded coves.

It’s a perfect place for swimming, snorkeling, or simply soaking in the scenery.

History lovers will discover Roman remains such as the Lumone Mausoleum.

Bunkers from the Maginot Line are reminders that the region held strategic importance in the 20th century.

Its proximity to Monaco allows you to combine nature and culture, tranquility and luxury.

Yet, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin remains deeply authentic, far from glitz and glamour.

Every street corner, every stone seems to whisper history.

Whether you're dreaming of a sun-drenched lunch on a terrace, a romantic dinner by the sea, or a festive meal with friends right by the water, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin invites you on a culinary journey as rich as it is diverse—memorable with every bite and accessible to all budgets.
