The Verdon Gorges

The Gorges du Verdon form the largest canyon in Europe, stretching nearly 25 kilometers between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. This awe-inspiring natural site is often nicknamed the “French Grand Canyon.” It is a true geological gem, carved over millions of years by the Verdon River.

The cliffs rise up to 700 meters high, creating a dramatic landscape. The contrast between the white limestone rock, Mediterranean vegetation, and the turquoise waters of the Verdon creates a breathtaking panorama. The area is a protected natural zone and part of the Verdon Regional Natural Park.

The Route des Crêtes is one of the best ways to admire the gorges from above. This 23-kilometer scenic loop begins and ends in La Palud-sur-Verdon. It winds along the canyon rim, offering dizzying viewpoints over the depths of the gorge.

The route includes 14 designated lookout points, such as La Carelle, Pas de la Baou, and La Dent d’Aire. Some of these spots are only accessible on foot, allowing for a more peaceful experience. Part of the route is one-way, for improved safety.

The Gorges du Verdon are a paradise for hikers. Many marked trails allow visitors to explore the landscapes on foot, fully immersed in nature. The most famous is undoubtedly the Blanc-Martel Trail, which stretches 15 kilometers along the right bank of the Verdon, from Chalet de la Maline to Point Sublime.

This trail offers grandiose views, with tunnels and staircases carved into the rock. Depending on your pace, it takes between 5 and 7 hours to complete. Another popular option is the Imbut Trail, a more technical hike that descends deep into the canyon, close to the riverbed.

The Garde Canal Trail is another beautiful and more accessible hike. It follows the lower Verdon Gorges and offers stunning views while tracing the emerald-blue river. It’s considered one of the most scenic and easier hikes, shorter and less demanding than the Blanc-Martel Trail.

Thrill-seekers will find a wide range of outdoor sports and adventure activities in the Verdon Gorges. Canoeing and kayaking are popular ways to explore the river, especially heading upstream from Lake Sainte-Croix toward the Samson Corridor, one of the most iconic sections of the canyon. Guided rafting trips are also available upstream, between Castellane and the Carajuan Bridge, offering adrenaline-filled descents through the rapids.

Rock climbing is another major attraction in the area. The gorges feature over 900 equipped climbing routes, ranging from beginner-friendly to highly technical. The cliffs of the Verdon are world-renowned for their sheer vertical walls and aesthetic beauty. For those seeking a slightly less intense experience, via ferrata routes provide a thrilling yet more accessible way to scale the canyon walls, combining hiking and climbing on secured paths.

For those who prefer to enjoy the scenery without breaking a sweat, the many viewpoints along the gorges are perfect for taking photos or observing griffon vultures, which have been successfully reintroduced to the region. Visitors may also spot chamois, foxes, and a wide variety of butterflies and birds.

By car, the Route des Gorges (D952) runs alongside the river and offers spectacular views of the canyon. You can stop at scenic spots such as the Pont de l’Artuby, or take the time to visit charming villages like Trigance, Rougon, Aiguines, and La Palud-sur-Verdon.
