Between Sky and Earth...
Perched on a mountainside at an altitude of around 800 meters, Tende is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive villages in the hinterland of Nice. Nestled in the heart of the Roya Valley, at the gateway to the Mercantour National Park and the famous Valley of Wonders, it offers a unique blend of heritage, history, and spectacular Alpine scenery.
As the last major French village before the Italian region of Piedmont, Tende long occupied a strategic position on the ancient Salt Route, which linked the Mediterranean coast to the Italian plains. Over the centuries, it was successively Provençal, Savoyard, French, and Italian before being definitively incorporated into France in 1947. The famous Clock Tower, visible from many points throughout the village, is one of Tende’s most recognizable landmarks and has become a true symbol of the village.
