A Balcony Suspended Above the Mediterranean...
Around thirty kilometres from Nice and just a few kilometres from Monaco, La Turbie is one of the most fascinating villages to discover in the hills above the French Riviera. Perched at an altitude of around 450 metres, it enjoys a spectacular location overlooking the Principality of Monaco and a large stretch of the Mediterranean coastline.
The village is best known for its extraordinary Trophy of Augustus, but La Turbie is also well worth exploring for its charming old village, narrow streets and panoramic viewpoints.
Before visiting the Trophy of Augustus, take some time to explore the historic centre of La Turbie on foot.
The old village has preserved a typically Mediterranean atmosphere, with its narrow passageways, old stone houses, small squares and winding lanes that criss-cross the historic heart of the village.
Traces of its medieval past can still be seen, particularly in the remains of its ancient fortifications. But part of La Turbie’s unique charm also comes from the constant feeling of being suspended between the mountains and the sea.
As you wander through its streets, the houses occasionally open up to reveal sudden glimpses of the deep blue Mediterranean and the steep hillsides plunging down towards Monaco.
It is impossible to talk about La Turbie without mentioning its most famous monument: the Trophy of Augustus, also known as the Trophy of the Alps.
It was erected at the end of the 1st century BC, around 7–6 BC, in honour of Emperor Augustus. The monument commemorated the subjugation of the Alpine tribes and the securing of the routes linking Italy with Gaul.
Its location was, of course, no coincidence.
La Turbie stood along the important Via Julia Augusta, the great Roman road that followed this part of the Mediterranean coastline.

Originally, the Trophy was considerably more imposing than it is today and is believed to have stood nearly 50 metres high. Visible from a great distance, it was a powerful symbol and an impressive demonstration of the might of Rome.
Over the centuries, the monument underwent many transformations, notably being converted into a fortress before eventually being partially destroyed. A major restoration campaign carried out during the 20th century restored some of its former monumental appearance.
Even today, its immense stone columns tower above La Turbie, making it one of the most spectacular Roman remains on the French Riviera.
A visit to the Trophy of Augustus is not limited to admiring the monument from the outside.
At the foot of the monument stands the small Edward Tuck Museum, where you can learn more about the history of the Trophy, its construction during the Roman period, its evolution over the centuries and the major restoration campaigns that helped restore part of the monumental appearance we see today. Documents, reconstructions and a film help visitors imagine what this immense structure would have looked like more than 2,000 years ago.
But do not simply admire the Trophy from the gardens.
It is also possible to climb inside the monument and reach a small terrace located on the second level of the base, at the foot of the great columns.
Here, you find yourself right at the heart of the Trophy, directly beneath the imposing remains of its upper structure. From this unique position, you can appreciate at close range the impressive scale of the columns and the monumental structure itself.
The terrace also offers a magnificent panoramic view over La Turbie, the surrounding mountains, the Principality of Monaco and the Mediterranean Sea.

Please note: Last admission is 30 minutes before closing time - Closed on 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 11 November, and 25 December - Early closing at 3:30 pm on 24 and 31 December.
An Exceptional Panorama over Monaco
La Turbie’s spectacular location is reason enough in itself to visit the village.
From the heights of La Turbie and the area around the Trophy of Augustus, the view plunges dramatically down towards Monaco, situated several hundred metres below.
On a clear day, the panorama stretches far along the Mediterranean coastline. You can see the Principality of Monaco, Cap Martin and the surrounding mountains, while in the opposite direction the view extends towards Nice and Cap Ferrat.

A Little Tip:
La Turbie can easily be included in a day trip combining Èze and Monaco, or Èze and the Simoula Trail in the hills above the village.
Allow at least two hours to explore La Turbie at a relaxed pace, and a little longer if you plan to visit the Trophy of Augustus and walk to the various panoramic viewpoints.
