Do you want to discover the most beautiful villages and towns on the French Riviera?

The ones that make you dream?

Here is a selection of the most stunning places in the Alpes-Maritimes just for you

Lake Saint-Croix

A Protected Natural Area...

Lake de Sainte-Croix is a true natural wonder of southern France, located on the border between the Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It is the largest of the Verdon lakes and a symbolic destination for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers in search of breathtaking landscapes.

Lake Sainte-Croix is an artificial reservoir covering 22 square kilometers, holding approximately 767 million cubic meters of water. It ranks as the fourth largest artificial lake in France. In addition to its touristic and hydroelectric uses, the lake also serves as a water source for Canadair firefighting aircraft during forest fires.

The water feeding the lake comes from the Verdon Gorges, passes under the Pont de Galetas, and travels roughly 11 kilometers before reaching the Sainte-Croix dam, an impressive structure standing 95 meters high.

The lake is nestled in a mountainous landscape, surrounded by wooded hills, limestone cliffs, and picturesque hilltop villages. The contrast between the lake’s turquoise waters and the surrounding white rock formations is simply magical.

Thanks to its clay content and micro-algae, the water of the lake has a milky turquoise hue reminiscent of a tropical lagoon.

Lake Sainte-Croix and its beaches provide an ideal setting for a wide range of outdoor activities. The water remains pleasantly warm throughout the season, making swimming always a delight.

On the shores of the lake, numerous clubs and associations offer opportunities to explore at your own pace—whether you're seeking adventure or relaxation, traveling solo, with friends, or as a family. From canoeing, kayaking, rowing, paddle boating, to sailing or cruising on an electric-powered boat, all kinds of adventures await on the turquoise waters of Lake Sainte-Croix.

Among the lake’s must-see spots, the Pont de Galetas, located near Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, stands out as one of the most spectacular—and most visited—sites. From this iconic bridge, you can venture right into the entrance of the Verdon Gorges. In a canoe, kayak, or pedal boat, you can paddle about 2 kilometers upstream, immersed in a breathtaking natural setting of limestone cliffs and vibrant turquoise waters.

For those who prefer to stay on land, there are plenty of hiking trails winding through the surrounding landscapes. Whether on foot or by car, you can explore the charming villages of the region such as Riez, Bauduen, or Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.

Finally, take time to discover the protected flora and fauna of the Verdon Regional Natural Park, a true haven of biodiversity nestled between lakes, gorges, and Provençal hills.

This is a place that is peaceful, spectacular, and full of discoveries. Many come for a day—and often wish they had stayed longer.

 How to Get There:

    • By car, via the Gorges du Verdon and the Route des Crêtes (118 km – approx. 2h30)
