A Captivating Atmosphere......
Located in the heart of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is often regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Nestled between two cliffs and crossed by a small stream, this medieval village looks like something out of a postcard.
Its history dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, but it was during the Middle Ages that Moustiers truly flourished. As early as the 5th century, monks settled in the cliffside caves, establishing a spiritual site that still radiates influence today.
The famous golden star, suspended between two rocks high above the village, continues to intrigue visitors. According to legend, it was hung there by a knight in gratitude to the Virgin Mary.
Perched at an altitude of 830 meters, the Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir Chapel majestically overlooks the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, nestled between two cliffs and offering a breathtaking view from the top of the Way of the Cross.
Built between the late 12th and 16th centuries on the remains of a former Marian temple dating back to the 5th century, the chapel presents an intriguing blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles.
The ascent takes about 15 to 20 minutes and requires sturdy footwear, as the stone steps can be slippery—even in dry weather.
Access is via a 262-step stone staircase (originally 365 steps), which climbs the hillside from Rue Marcel Provence. Along the way, you'll find 14 Stations of the Cross, installed in 1860 and later adorned with ceramic tiles created by Simone Garnier.
A small, older oratory from the 14th century also remains along the path.
Admission is free, and the chapel is open daily throughout the year.
Moustiers is also renowned for its fine faience, a form of decorative pottery that earned the village its reputation as early as the 17th century. Even today, several workshops continue to uphold this tradition, and visitors can explore museums and artisan shops where this unique craftsmanship is proudly showcased.
The village has preserved its old-world charm, with cobblestone streets, stone houses, and flower-filled fountains.
