A Medieval Village...
Perched on the castle hill overlooking the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Haut-de-Cagnes is one of the most beautiful medieval villages on the French Riviera.
A true village within a town, it forms the historic heart of Cagnes-sur-Mer. Listed as a historic site since 1948, it has preserved an authentic and peaceful atmosphere, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the coastline. Even today, several hundred residents live within its narrow streets, keeping alive the spirit of a genuine Provençal village.
As soon as you pass through its ancient gates, you discover a fascinating maze of cobbled lanes, flower-filled stairways, vaulted passageways, and charming little squares. Around every corner, new views unfold, revealing old houses with colourful façades, artists' studios, and panoramic vistas stretching across the Mediterranean Sea and the peaks of the Mercantour mountains.
The village is dominated by the majestic Grimaldi Castle-Museum, built at the beginning of the 14th century by the Grimaldi family, who ruled Cagnes for nearly seven hundred years. Now converted into a museum, it houses remarkable collections of art, furniture, and historical objects.
The Grimaldi Castle-Museum
Built around 1300 as a defensive fortress by Rainier Grimaldi, Lord of Cagnes and Admiral of France, the castle withstood several sieges before being transformed around 1620 into a more refined noble residence by Jean-Henri Grimaldi. Its exterior has retained a distinctly military appearance, while its interior spaces reflect the influence of 17th-century Italian palaces.
The site brings together several cultural attractions under one roof. Among them are the Olive Tree Museum, dedicated to the history and traditions of this emblematic Mediterranean tree, and the Solidor Donation, a collection of around forty portraits of the singer Suzy Solidor, created by artists such as Foujita, Tamara de Lempicka, and Marie Laurencin. Temporary contemporary art exhibitions are also regularly held at the museum.
One of the castle’s treasures is its spectacular painted Baroque ceiling depicting the Fall of Phaethon, attributed to the Genoese painter Giulio Benso in the 1620s. The building also preserves a triangular inner courtyard, vaulted rooms, and elevated viewpoints overlooking Cagnes-sur-Mer, the Mediterranean coastline, and the Alps.
Haut-de-Cagnes is also renowned for having attracted numerous artists who were captivated by its exceptional light, authenticity, and timeless atmosphere. Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Chaïm Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani, Félix Ziem, and Yves Klein were among those who fell under its spell. Their presence helped transform Haut-de-Cagnes into a true artistic centre, sometimes referred to as the “Montmartre of the French Riviera.”
Even today, numerous artists’ studios, galleries, and exhibitions continue this artistic tradition. Strolling through the village streets is like following in the footsteps of these great artists while enjoying an exceptional setting where history, art, and the Mediterranean art of living blend together harmoniously.
Square Boules in Haut-de-Cagnes: A Tradition Unique in the World
In Haut-de-Cagnes, the narrow, steep, cobbled streets have always been far from ideal for traditional games of pétanque. On these sharp slopes, round boules had an unfortunate tendency to roll downhill, quickly turning every game into a chase through the village streets.
It was in the early 1980s that a few local residents came up with an idea that was as simple as it was original: replacing the traditional metal boules with wooden cubes. Thanks to their flat sides and edges, these unusual “boules” stayed in place much more easily on the uneven terrain of the medieval village. Thus, the game of square boules was born.
What began as a joke among friends soon became a genuine local institution. Over the years, this unusual invention evolved into one of the most original traditions on the French Riviera, eventually becoming one of the symbols of Haut-de-Cagnes.
Although the title of “World Championship” is primarily tongue-in-cheek, the participants take their matches very seriously. Teams compete enthusiastically in the village streets, under the amused gaze of spectators watching from windows, terraces, or the shade of the small village squares.
Rules Similar to Pétanque:
The rules are largely inspired by those of traditional pétanque:
But that is where the similarity ends. A square boule never rolls as expected. It may bounce, veer off course, stop abruptly, or take completely unpredictable trajectories. On the uneven cobblestones of Haut-de-Cagnes, every throw brings its share of surprises.
It is precisely this element of unpredictability that gives the game its unique charm. Here, skill matters just as much as luck, and the best strategists are not always the winners.
After strolling through the streets of Haut-de-Cagnes and visiting the Grimaldi Castle, there is nothing better than sitting down on a shaded terrace to enjoy the village’s unique atmosphere. Haut-de-Cagnes is home to several excellent restaurants where visitors can enjoy lunch or dinner in a setting steeped in history, often with magnificent views over the Mediterranean Sea.
